  • Articles are “a, an, the” and are used as adjectives. They come before nouns.
  • “a” or “an” means “one”.
  • “a” is used before a word beginning with a consonant sound.
  • Examples: a team, a boy , a girl, a chair, a dog.
  • “an” is used before a word beginning with a vowel sound ( a, e, i, o, u ).
  • Examples: an ass, an apple, an elephant, an egg, an Indian, an ink bottle, an orange, an ox, an umbrella, an unknown person, an hour, an honest man, an heir.
  • Since the following words do not begin with vowel sounds, “a” is used instead of “an”.
  • Examples: a university, a unit, a union, a European, a useful animal.
  • The definite article “the “ is used before a word denoting a particular person, place or thing already referred.
  • Example : This is the book I wanted.
  • Let us go to the market.
  • MR.Ram is the teacher whom l like most.
  • “The “ is used before a singular noun representing a whole class.
  • Examples: The cow is a useful animal.
  • The rose is a beautiful flower.
  • “The” is used with the names of rivers, seas, oceans, group of islands and mountains.
  • The Indian ocean, the Himalayas, the Cauvery.
  • “The” is used before the words denoting unique objects.
  • The sun, The star, The earth, The sea.
  • No article is used before proper nouns.
  • Examples: Chennai is the capital of Tamil Nadu.
  • Mumbai is a big city.
  • Ravi is a good boy.
  • No article is used before abstract nouns in general sense.
  • Examples: Truth alone triumphs.
